The Costume

This was our first Halloween that involved a costume request. Up to now, we've gotten by with hand-me-down costumes. This year, Addison wanted to be Ariel...you know, The Little Mermaid.

I started searching online for costumes and quickly realized two things....1. Disney costumes are expensive, like $60 expensive. 2. Generic mermaid costumes are less-than-modest...even the 3 year-old versions. So, it became clear, a homemade costume was going to have to happen...my first homemade costume.

The mermaid skirt was the most daunting part of the costume...I am not a seamstress...not even close, so this was a challenge.

The skirt started coming together when Virginia passed along this formal that came into the thrift shop.

I cut it into a mermaid tail shape.

I gathered and sewed some sparkly tulle to make the mermaid tail fins.

No seashell bra for this mermaid :) Addison was given an Ariel shirt for Christmas last year that we used for her top. I splurged on the Ariel wig to complete the costume.

Brian and I were just talking about our favorite homemade costumes when we were growing up - way to take on the making of THE LITTLE MERMAID and the tradition of homemade costumes! I hope to do that with my kiddo someday :) It looked great!
